BEING strapped to the wings of a plane flying at 130mph might be scary for some, but for Chantal Dean it would be a dream come true.

Ms Dean, a science teacher at Melksham Oak Community School, is set to take to the skies as she attempts to generate £5,000 for the Lewis Moody Foundation and an outdoors classroom for her school.

The daredevil stunt will be the realisation of an ambition she has had since she was young and came about after a discussion with her pupils regarding accomplishing your objectives.

The 34-year-old adrenalin junkie said: “I have done other adrenalin activities before, the standard bungee jump and sky dive whilst travelling, but this will be my first wing walk.

“It is something that I have wanted to do for years and so I put it down on my life map as part of a project I have been working on with developing student leadership.

“We want to model for our students the attitudes that we want them to embrace, always having big scary goals and aspirations.

“Really one of my big things is raising children’s aspirations and the best way to do that is to be a role model and show them what they can do if they want.”

Melksham Oak, along with St John’s Midsomer Norton Primary, are currently undertaking a pilot scheme, the Compass for Life Project, which encourages children to achieve their goals.

Ms Dean will attempt the feat, on Saturday, July 2, alongside fellow teacher Steve Bamford, of St. Johns, at the Chiltern Airpark in Oxfordshire.

While she is on board pilots will be performing loop the loops with the plane just to add a little more thrill to the high octane activity.

“I will be fundraising for the Lewis Moody Foundation and also the building of the outdoor classroom at Melksham Oak School,” she added.

“Having had a former student, David Langton, who died of a brain tumour, Lewis’ charity is very pertinent as is working alongside HeadSmart.

“The Outdoor classroom is the project that the student leaders have been working to support.

“It is helping them to give something back and we talk about leaving a legacy for future students and the community; something that is so important in a town like Melksham.”

Those who want to donate towards Ms Dean’s fund should send a cheque to Melksham Oak School marked financial office; charity wing walk.
