THE thought of leaving the European Union is too much for one woman who is planning a march through Swindon town centre on Saturday to protest against last week’s sensational Brexit vote.

Tracy Michaels, 42, of Oakhurst, is drumming up support for the demonstration which will start at 11am on Saturday July 2 and see protesters march from beneath the big screen at Wharf Green to Swindon Town Hall.

Tracy, who works as an office manager at Foundations Archaeology, based at the Shaftesbury Centre, said: “I have been talking with my work colleagues about how the Brexit vote is so potentially damaging.

“Every single person in the office is shocked at the way it has gone and it’s clear that the Leave campaign’s promises were a bunch of lies.

“I decided to see if we could do something about it and show our support for the other demonstrations in London and other cities.

“I want to say to people who voted to leave that there’s nothing wrong with changing your mind if you see that the decision to leave was wrong. There’s no shame in it if you can fix it.”

Tracy, who describes herself as “not even slightly political”, said: “I have never done anything like this before so it’s all a bit scary. But I believe we can still stop the repercussions even now.

“I’ve had a lot of positive responses from people and businesses and hopefully we’ll get a good turnout.”

The march coincides with others taking place around the country this weekend, with more than 30,000 expected to attend a rally outside Parliament on Saturday to protest against the UK’s vote to leave the EU.

Meanwhile a march being labelled Swindon Unites is due to take place from Wharf Green on Sunday, July 10, at 2pm.
