CHIPPENHAM is fast becoming a must-visit destination for tourists and daytrippers after it was named one of the best market towns in the country.

National Express asked 1,000 people to vote for the UK’s most popular destinations and Chippenham ranked sixth on the list – much to the joy of locals.

Chippenham Mayor Terry Gibson said: “We are delighted that so many people agree with us that Chippenham is a wonderful place to visit.

“We have such a wide selection of independent shops and cafés, and unique features such as Chippenham Museum, the Heritage Centre and even the opportunity to stroll or picnic along the riverbank right in our town centre.

“Chippenham is a popular stop for coaches from all over the world.

“During our Medieval Festival we welcomed a coachload of visitors from Austria who also brought a couple from our twin town of Friedberg with them.

“Together with our recent Purple Flag award, this shows what a popular and thriving town Chippenham is, with something for everyone almost 24/7.”

Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire took top spot in the survey with Thirsk in North Yorkshire and Grantham in Lincolnshire rounding out the top three.

Wiltshire town Devizes also made the list, coming eighth in the rankings.

Debbie Williams, president of Chippenham Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted that Chippenham has been placed as the sixth favourite market town to visit.

“The chamber is very proud of our town and welcomes this accolade. We hope this will increase tourism in Chippenham, which will help to boost our local economy.”

National Express managing director Tom Stables, said: “Wiltshire is a stunning county and Chippenham and Devizes, which are rich with history and packed with points of interest, are real gems, so it’s not surprising they are regarded as among the best towns in the UK.

“It’s tough to think of anything more quintessentially British than a market town and we think that’s worth celebrating.”
