ORGANISERS of the Swindon Half Marathon have launched a crowdfunding campaign to make sure the popular event goes ahead.

The Swindon Half - due to take place on Sunday, October 16 - is a major event in the town’s community timetable but last year the British Heart Foundation withdrew its support.

SEQOL Community Foundation, the charitable arm of SEQOL stepped in, but while SEQOL is leading on the event again this year, organisers still need to raise £27,000 from the community to fund essential expenses such as road closures.

Michelle Howard, chairman of SEQOL Community Foundation, said: “The success of the 2015 event was down to the sponsorship and donations of local businesses and individuals, as well as support from all the amazing volunteers, and it is their generosity and commitment that will make this event happen again.

“We have already had donations from local companies and individuals, but we are now calling on the town as a whole to give one final push and do what it can towards one of Swindon’s biggest and most popular community events.

“It’s not all about the 13.1mile route - there is also a five-mile multi terrain and also a fun two-mile route. So whilst ensuring it is great for hardcore athletes, it will again be friendly and inclusive, with something for everyone, an event which encourages people across Swindon to come together and be active.

“I know the community of Swindon loved this event, and I also know that the people of Swindon and its companies, big and small, are generous.

"If as many of us as possible put our hands in our pockets and contribute what we can, we will secure another brilliant Half Marathon that the town can be proud of.”
