WORK to build 230 homes at Lay Wood near Devizes has started and the developer is to make a contribution of £2.5 million to help pay for education and better public transport.

Originally the scheme caused a major protest from both Bishops Cannings Parish Council and Devizes Town Council but now it is hoped the money that David Wilson Homes is pay as part of its planning consent will help to improve services.

Regional managing director Carl Haley said: “We are investing more than £2.5m into the local area as part of our section 106 agreement with the council. On top of this we are constantly looking at other ways we can support the local community and we are currently speaking to local schools about involvement in our educational programme.

"As well as building new homes at Lay Wood, David Wilson Homes will construct two play areas. There will also be a ‘trim trail’ within the retained woodland and a pond.

"Work is progressing well at Lay Wood, with the foundations for the new three, four and five bedroom homes currently being built. The first properties will be available to buy in early 2017."

Bishops Cannings Parish Council chairman Paul Robinson said: "The work has started so although we were against the scheme we have to try and get as much out of it as we can.

"It might be that a community hall could be built in that area where people can meet."

David Wilson Homes said the money would go towards education, transport, sports pitches and play areas.
