GREEN-FINGERED gardeners are furious after a flower box that decorates the way into Edington was demolished by a passing vehicle.

About a tonne of soil was tossed from the wooden and metal flower box near Woodbridge. The village sign urging people to drive with care was also hit.

"There is about a tonne of soil in those boxes so whoever hit it must have been driving at high speed," said George Fraser of Greatwoods.

"It is so badly damaged it cannot be patched up. If the box hadn't been there, the vehicle would have flattened the village sign and rolled into Strad Brook."

Sandie Lewis, who looks after the three flower boxes, said: “I thought I'd drive down there to see what I could do but when I got there I realised it was irreparable and I didn’t even stop the car. There are about 50 or 60 bulbs under all the debris so maybe I will start to gather those soon.

“The box is sponsored by Countrywide and we managed to save the front piece with their advertisement on so hopefully we can incorporate that into the new one.”

Bits of mangled car bumper were left at the scene and police have been asked to look into reports that the incident was caused by a contractor cutting grass.

Mike Swabey, chairman of Edington Parish Council, confirmed that the sign will be replaced after an investigation has taken place.
