A SWINDON man is facing an uncomfortable few days at the police station as officers wait for him to pass a suspicious package they believe may be concealed in his backside.

Arif Alagoz, 27, of Rodbourne Road, appeared before magistrates on Monday morning flanked by two plainclothes police officers wearing latex gloves.

The court heard that he had come to the attention of the police after crashing his BMW on the eastbound exit ramp at junction 16 of the M4 on Saturday.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving without insurance, driving without a valid licence, possession of cocaine, possession of cannabis and possession of criminal property, namely a quantity of cash.

He had not been charged in relation to any of the offences when he appeared in court.

Crown prosecutor, Keith Ballinger, told the court that when Alagoz was searched at the police station, officers noticed that he appeared to have a rubber object concealed inside him.

Attempts to encourage him to produce the alleged object had proved unsuccessful by Monday morning.

Magistrates were asked to remand Alagoz in police custody for up to 192 hours to allow time for the object to pass.

Section 152 of the Criminal Justice Act gives them that power where they are persuaded that it will assist with the recovery of evidence in drugs cases.

Ben Worthington, defending Alagoz, appealed for the magistrates to refuse the request.

Mr Worthington said his client was certain that the police would not find anything inside him and that had he concealed items as alleged, he would have revealed them already.

Ultimately, the magistrates decided to approve the request from the police.

Alagoz was remanded in custody to Gablecross Police Station until January 31 or until such time as any new evidence reveals itself.
