SWINDON Town head coach Luke Williams was pleased his side could deliver the result when it mattered as they beat Coventry City 3-1 at the Ricoh Arena.

Two goals in six first-half minutes from Nicky Ajose and then Jonathan Obika put Town in the driving seat at the break before the former wrapped up the win with 19 minutes remaining.

While Williams was happy to see Ajose get off the mark following his January arrival and Obika net his first goal since November, it was the quality of the balls that created the goals on a difficult playing surface that pleased him just as much.

“Both teams were really trying to take all points and were very aggressive,” he said.

“We made the breakthrough and followed that up. After that, it was more difficult for Coventry.

“Two very good deliveries and two very good finishes. Nicky has to open his foot and make the perfect contact because of the angle of the ball, and he did that.

“(It’s) a driven ball across (for the second) and Jon making the correct choice of finish, to dive and head the ball.

“That’s where the majority of goals are scored all around the world and it is about trying to deliver the ball into that area with quality and then for players inside the box to anticipate and select the right finish.”

Coventry responded in a physical manner in the second half but Ajose’s second, having squandered an earlier chance to extend Town’s lead shortly after the restart, put the game to bed as a contest and Williams puts that down to mental strength.

“We completely expected (Coventry’s response) and spoke about it at half-time,” he added.

“It’s about personality at that point and about how strong you are as an individual and then, that combined effort from the players will give you a pack mentality to stick together and put your body in front of the ball and to win first and second balls.

"That is the reality of League One football, particularly at this time of the year at the bottom of the league.”

Defender Lloyd Jones limped off with 15 minutes left to play at the Ricoh but Williams was not overly concerned, and explained Yaser Kasim’s absence from the matchday squad as a recurrence of his ankle injury.

“We don’t know exactly yet, the good thing was that he walked off the pitch, he wasn’t stretchered off or anything of that nature,” said the Swindon head coach.

“We’ll assess it over the next 48 hours and hopefully it will settle down.

“Dion came on and looked strong and picked up where Lloyd had left off and that is a great thing to have in the squad.

“Yaser had a scan which didn’t reveal too much but he is still feeling some pain in his ankle and there was no need to risk bringing him into the squad.”
