A CHURCH which has faced accessibility issues for decades is about to undergo a major refurbishment to make it more user-friendly.

Holy Trinity Church in Stallard Street, Trowbridge, has received £75,000 from the diocese but needs the community’s support to raise more money and carry out the full works.

The committee of the Grade II listed church plans to build a car park to add to the limited lay-by currently used, improve accessibility for disabled people, and install staging and better audiovisual facilities.

Churchwarden Mandi Archer, of Victoria Road, said: “It’s a very exciting time for the church and we’re really looking forward to implementing the changes.

“We have been planning the changes for quite some time as parking has been an issue for a while.

“Plans are in place to build a car park next to where the scout hut currently is. At the moment it’s not safe to be a car park but it will be following the work.

“Once the changes have been made the church will become a more useful and flexible place for people to enjoy.”

In addition to the car park and interior works, there are plans to build a toddler garden to create a safe place should the church need to be evacuated.

The church committee estimates it needs another £25,000 to complete the works, which are scheduled to start in July subject to planning permission, and hopes the community will contribute towards the overall cost.
