THE flag was lowered to at half-mast over Swindon Borough Council’s offices today following the terrorist atrocity in Westminster.

Leader David Renard told the Advertiser: “We have lowered our flag as a mark of respect to the police officer and civilians murdered in the terrorist incident in Westminster.

“We are deeply saddened by yesterday’s events and our condolences are with the families of those who lost their lives. We also wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured.”

He said: “Lowering the flag is a sign of respect to those who were killed and a signal that our free democratic society will not bow down to terror and that all communities will unite to repudiate such acts.”

Wiltshire Police along with other forces throughout the country also lowered their flags in remembrance of their fallen colleague.

Many of them have receive messages of support from the public. Over in Marlborough one member of the public turned up at the police station with bags of doughnuts to show his appreciation.

Officers later posted on social media: “The man wanted to remain anonymous but said that in light of yesterday's tragic events in London and because the police do such a brilliant job, he wanted to say thank you and this was all he could think to do to show his gratitude.

“We are all very touched by the kind words from members of the public over the past almost 24 hours and our thoughts remain with all those affected by yesterday's incident, including the family, friends and colleagues of PC Keith Palmer who was killed in the line of duty.”
