SUPPORT for a summer festival celebrating the history of Marlborough’s Pelham Puppets is building after a public meeting last Thursday.
Dozens turned up to the town hall to hear about the plans for the July 8-9 festival, which is happening on July 8-9, which was presented by the official historian for Pelham Puppets David Leech.
Although it is still in the early preparation stages, Mr Leech was buoyed by the response and enthusiasm surrounding the festival, which will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Pelham Puppets.
“It is a very exciting time and the project is definitely gaining momentum. People have come to me and are eager to help out in any way they can,” said Mr Leech.
“Although our bid for funding from the Arts Council was unsuccessful, we will keep trying as if you do not go for it you will never be in with a chance.
“We want to raise £20,000 for this non-profit, community event and so far we have raised nearly £5,000 which is very encouraging.
“We have very generous support from the Marlborough Historical Society and the town council have already provided the venues, the town hall and Priory Garden free of charge. It should be a wonderful event and one that I cannot wait for.”
The company, which had a factory in London Road from 1953-87, was founded by Bob Pelham in 1947.
Over the next four decades it produced more than nine million puppets. For more information email tradpup@btinternet.com
