OXFORD United are attracting interest from foreign investors seeking to take over the club.

The Advertiser’s sister paper, The Oxford Mail, knows of two parties who have expressed their desire to get involved with the Sky Bet League One outfit.

It is believed a Chinese consortium were the first to emerge, but the other has yet to meet United chairman Darryl Eales.

No deal for either, however, is imminent.

The second group is headed by Uruguayan Juan Sartori, 36, the son-in-law of Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev.

Mr Rybolovlev is the chairman of Champions League quarter-finalists AS Monaco and, in figures compiled by Forbes, the American business magazine, was ranked 190th on a list of the world’s richest men with an estimated worth of around $7.3 billion.

GILLINGHAM chairman Paul Scally says a new stadium could allow the club to sustain a place in the top two divisions of English football.

The League One side are hoping to construct a new stadium at Mill Hill in Medway, opposite their training ground.

The Gills have been based at their current 11,582-seater Priestfield ground in Medway since 1893.

“I’m not saying that if you build a stadium that guarantees you Premier League status, of course, but what I am saying is that if you don’t build a stadium, you really can’t sustain top Championship or Premier League football in a stadium such as we have now,” said Scally.

COVENTRY City chairman Tim Fisher says the relegation-threatened League One club are still planning to leave the Ricoh Arena - and share Coventry Rugby’s Butts Park Arena.

He told a Sky Blue Trust supporters’ meeting on Monday night that Coventry RFC chairman Jon Sharp has now agreed in principle to the move.

City are currently contracted to stay as tenants at the Ricoh until 2018.

And Fisher admitted club owners Sisu have cancelled plans for a new ground.

He added: “We have spent a lot of time working with the Football League and Coventry Rugby Club to develop a stadium which would be more than ample in terms of capacity.”

BOBBY Grant has signed a two-year contract extension with Fleetwood Town.

Grant, 26, joined the club from Blackpool in July 2015 after a brief loan spell and has played in every League One game this season.

The midfielder has scored seven goals to help Uwe Rosler’s promotion-chasing side reach third place and has been rewarded with a new deal until 2019.

“The manager was a massive part of the decision. I’ve really enjoyed the style that he wants to play,” Grant said.

“I’m very happy to be a part of what we’re creating here.”
