CONOR Thomas was delighted that the ending of his five-year goal drought was done so in such significant fashion after it secured Swindon Town three priceless points against Millwall on Saturday.

Although they remain in the League One relegation zone, the 1-0 victory keeps Town in with a chance of beating the drop before the season is out.

Midfielder Thomas found himself in the right place at the right time against the Lions as a deflected Nicky Ajose effort broke perfectly to him in the Millwall box deep into stoppage time and he kept his cool to fire home and get on the scoresheet for the first time since January 31, 2012.

“It’s not a great stat but I am pleased to get the goal today and thankfully it was enough to see us over the line,” said Thomas.

“We know the situation we are in, we need to pick up as many wins as we can. I just thought I'd gamble and hopefully it will fall to me and thankfully it did so I am pleased.

“It keeps us fighting and that’s all we can do. We have just got to concentrate on ourselves and win as many games as possible. We know it’s difficult but it gives us hope to fight on another week.

“It is always going to be difficult game against them, you could see they were big, strong physical team. The bottom line is we got the three points and that’s all that matters at this stage of the season.”

Against Millwall, Thomas was making his first start since Swindon’s 2-1 win at Bolton back on January 14, although that was only down to an injury in the warm-up.

Ben Gladwin was forced to pull out just before kick-off, with Town head coach Luke Williams opting to promote Thomas from the substitutes’ bench, and the 23-year-old showed he made exactly the right choice.

“I found out just as I was going in from the warm-up, so maybe five minutes before (kick-off),” said Thomas.

“The type of character I am, I just prepare as normal. I didn’t do anything different the night before and hadn’t done anything different all week to if I was playing, so I was fairly relaxed and just pleased to be playing.”
