A COUPLE from Trowbridge celebrated 60 happy years of marriage at the weekend by having a meal with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchild at the weekend.

Bryan and Lorraine Amer, of Drynham Road, have enjoyed a life of love and laughter ever since meeting in Trowbridge Park, aged 16, when taking a walk with their respective friends.

“It took a while getting to know each other after meeting in the park,” said Mr Amer, 79.

“After a few years of getting to know each other we married at County Hall on Saturday, March 23 and on the Monday I had to leave for national service in Cyprus – it wasn't much of a honeymoon.

“People thought she was pregnant but it was actually because we wanted to tie the knot before I flew out to Cyprus.

“I was out there for 18 months before coming back on compassionate leave as mother fell ill.

“When I returned we began our happy life together. I think patience has had a big part to play in reaching 60 years of marriage – it’s very important.”

The couple have had two sons together, Lee and Darren, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs Amer, also 79, who worked at the Imperial Tobacco factory in Westbury, said: “We have always been really happy and have been lucky to have two lovely children.

“I still remember chatting to Bryan in the park all those years ago and the rest is history as they say.

“It’s always lovely getting the whole family together and this anniversary is a great opportunity to do so.”
