A man has been banned from the roads after he was caught more than double the drink drive limit after fleeing from the scene of an accident in which a BMW was damaged.

Forty-year-old Mark Brown, who provided a care-of address of Ferndale Road when he came before magistrates sitting in Swindon, pleaded guilty to the five charges brought against him.

The bench was told how on February 26 Brown had been driving a W-reg Ford Transit Van on Queens Drive which was involved in a crash with a BMW in the carpark of Morrisons on Dorcan Way. He left the scene, and police officers tried to get him to pull over on both Dorcan Way and Queens Drive, but he ignored their sirens and blue lights. When he was eventually stopped officers breathalysed him and he was found to have 79mcgs of alcohol in 100ml of his breath. The legal driving limit is 35mcgs. He was also found to have a quantity of cannabis on his person.

Brown further pleaded guilty to a charge of assault by beating against a man on the same date.

Chairman of the bench Ninna Gibson disqualified him from driving for 22 months, although this will be reduced by 168 days if he completes a drink drivers' awareness course.

He must also pay a victim surcharge of £85 along with £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service towards bringing the matter to court.

She further ordered he must complete 150 hours of unpaid work in the community.
