NIGEL Tripp admits a sense of frustration lingers at the Southbank as he tries to plot Corsham Town's route away from the bottom of the Toolstation League First Division table.

Tripp's men ended a run of five straight defeats with a 2-0 triumph over Malmesbury Victoria on Saturday, moving back above local rivals Calne into third-from-bottom spot in the league.

The bottom two positions need to be avoided to quash fears of a likely drop into the Wiltshire League, a task made all the harder by the recent loss of the bulk of Corsham's players, following the sacking, then subsequent reinstatement, of Tripp and a boardroom and membership split which paralysed the club in February.

It has all left Tripp firefighting with a largely inexperienced squad one of whom, Josh Bright, netted twice to record his side's eighth league win of the season and the manager's first since his restoration in charge.

"It's still frustrating when you see things like one ex-player (Ben Pring) who scores a hat-trick against you (for Chippenham Park the previous week),'' said Tripp.

"What we had there was a plan for the future and now it's just being done on a game-by-game basis, but we'll see the season out and then take stock after that.

"The lads have shown a great attitude and worked hard and if we can finish third from bottom then that will be a job done for us.''

As if to remind the club of glories past, Saturday's match featured a get-together of Corsham's 2006-07 Western League Premier Division-winning side, but Tripp was nonetheless pleased to see the current crop pick up a crucial three points in their quest for safety.

"To be honest, it was one of those games where we worked hard and got a bit of the rub of the green,'' added the manager.

"In the last couple of games, we've done really well, but there has probably been a little lack of concentration which is down to inexperience, really.''

Calne are a point behind Corsham but have a game in hand after slipping to a 2-0 loss, with first-half goals from title-chasing Keynsham's Matthew Brown and Matt Curnock.

Chippenham Park got back to winning ways as they fought back from 2-0 down to defeat Ashton & Backwell United at Hardenhuish Park.

Miles Hardidge scored twice in a couple of minutes to put the visitors in control, but the three points stayed at home as goals from Scott Fear, Darrin Moss and Aaron Ledgister turned the match on its head.

Devizes Town picked up a creditable point as they held title-chasing Wellington 1-1 at Nursteed Road.

There was no luck for Warminster Town as they went down to a 1-0 defeat at Radstock Town.

Westbury United extended their league winning run to six in a row with a 3-1 win against Oldland Abbotonians at Meadow Lane.

The home side took the lead when debutant Ricky Hulbert twisted perfectly to head home Martin Johnson's cross, but their joy was shortlived as Oldland's Connor Davies strode forward and buried a 30-yarder for the equaliser.

In the second half, Hulbert drew a foul from the visiting goalkeeper and Jordan Pinder fired home to restore the home side's advantage.

With under 10 minutes remaining, Hulbert beat the offside trap to fire home the third goal.
