STAVERTON’S play area is about to undergo an exciting revamp after the parish council was handed a grant by the Big Lottery Fund.

The £9,995 will buy new equipment, including a frog sit-in springer, a replacement wooden walk trail and a flying saucer spinner.

Since 2012, £40,000 has been spent on the play area in School Lane, with grants from Wiltshire Council, Bradford on Avon Area Board and the Palmer Gardens garden centre.

Parish clerk June Jones, of Marina Drive, said: “Currently, most of the equipment in the play area is suitable for older children, but the new equipment will cater for children aged eight and under.

“Five years ago the area had to be shut down due to health and safety concerns and the village was in uproar.

“It’s a bit of a rags to riches story and we can’t wait for the new equipment to be installed.

“We are very proud of our play area and the residents are very protective of it, so it’s important that we maintain it properly.

“It was amazing when we heard about the grant and we are very grateful.”

The equipment has been ordered from Yorkshire-based Streetscape and plans are in place to install it as soon as possible.
