GARDEN lovers across Devizes are to throw open their doors on June 3 and 4 as part of three events organised by Devizes In Bloom.

A total of 18 gardens of all sizes will be open from noon to 5pm to get people in the mood for the Floral Trail that will take people across the town throughout July and its gardening competition.

In bloom chairman Zena Robson said: "There will be a diverse range of gardens from large country-style to small courtyards with plants in pots, ponds, wildflower areas and fruit.

"Not all will be open on both days but maps are now on sale with all the details. Some will offer refreshments including cake which is always welcome."

Among those opening their gardens is Jan Lawrence of Church Walk, Devizes, who was a winner in last year's In Bloom contest. She only has a small courtyard garden but has transformed it with around 200 pots and planters and a water feature.

The maps, which act as entrance tickets, can be bought for £5 from the Town Hall, the Bear Hotel, Wharf Tearooms, Devizes Books, Hillworth Park Cafe and the Emporium. They will also be available on the day from the open gardens. Children under 18 can enter for free but must be accompanied by an adult and only assistance dogs will be allowed.

Money raised will go the mayor's charity appeal but the causes will not be announced until after the mayor making tonight (18).

Town centre businesses are supporting the floral trail which has a theme of anniversaries. Ms Robson said: "The theme can be interpreted how they wish. Some, like Rangebourne’s and Walter Rose’s, have their own anniversaries this year, others can use whatever they like for example Cats Protection is celebrating 90 years, National Garden Scheme 90 years, The Summer of Love, as in San Francisco, floppy hats and flares, 50 years.

"There are also quite a lot of film possibilities such as Lawrence of Arabia 55 years, Bonnie and Clyde 50 years and Saturday Night Fever 40 years."

The floral trail map will be available from a number of shops and the town hall. The Devizes In Bloom competition for gardeners will be judged in July but entries must be at the town hall by June 9. Forms are available from the town hall.
