A CANDLELIT vigil will be held in the town centre this evening in honour of the victims who were killed during last night's terror attack in Manchester.

Starting at 8pm-8.30pm near the memorial square in Regent Circus, the gathering will give Swindonians the opportunity to remember those caught up in the devastating attack which left 22 dead - including children - and over 50 people injured.

Organiser Jamie Brewer, who lives in Wichelstowe, said he felt compelled to pay tribute and hopes others join him this evening.

"I saw the news last night about what happened and when I woke up this morning, I thought it would be a good idea to get Swindon more involved to remember and that's why I put details on Facebook for people to share," the 25-year-old said.

"We need to stand together and it would be nice for people to come along and pay their respects.

"What makes the whole thing worse is that the fact children are involved. My heart sank when I saw it on the TV."

Everyone is welcome to attend the vigil and it is expected to last an hour.

Since the news broke about the explosion at the Manchester Arena, following Ariana Grande's gig last night, millions of people around the globe have paid tribute to the victims and their families.

Greater Manchester Police say the attack was carried out by a lone male suicide bomber who detonated an improvised explosive device. He died at the arena.

Security services believe they know his identity and are investigating whether he acted alone or was part of a network.

Speaking after chairing a Cobra meeting this morning, Prime Minister Theresa May said the "callous" attack was "among the worst terrorism we have experienced in the United Kingdom".
