A FUND set up in memory of Dauntsey's schoolboy Hugo Halkes, who died aged 12 in a road accident in Devizes, has grants of £1,000 to give to teenagers to fund a gap year.

Hugo's Grant is being offered by the Wiltshire charity Children's Chance to people aged between 16 and 18 from the Devizes or Pewsey area to enable them to take part in an activity or project they would not otherwise be able to afford to mark the tenth anniversary of Hugo's death.

Chairman of Children's Chance, Jane Miller said: “Now that most external exams are over pupils can start to look ahead to the summer holidays and possibly a break before going to university.

"Many of these young people may be worried about funding university and studying generally and so may have ruled out an overseas opportunity – hopefully this grant will enable them to think again, and realise that it is possible to have that once in a lifetime chance to take part in a new and perhaps life changing experience.

"As it is the tenth anniversary of Hugo’s accident we would like to make this a special year in his memory by offering more than one grant and we hope that more young people will really be able to think about making their dream a reality this year."
