BREATHALYSERS have been issued to door staff at club e11evn in Chippenham for a national campaign which aims to reduce drunken fuelled conflict and alcohol related crimes during nights out.

Security staff at the popular club on The Bridge, were handed the measurers and given the appropriate training on Tuesday (July 18) to help them determine levels of intoxication and to make the night-time environment a safer place to enjoy.

Suspected drunks queuing to get inside the club may be asked to take a test in order to gain entry and those who are deemed too drunk to enter will be asked to take a ten-minute rest and a drink of water before being retested.

Sergeant Steve McGlynn, lead for licensing, said: “We are working closely with door staff to ensure this new scheme is embedded and becomes normal practice.

“Many people are found to be very drunk before they enter pubs and clubs as a result of enjoying drinks at home which lead to problems for that person later on in the evening.

“We want the public to have a good time, but also to be aware of the effect of drinking too much, too quickly. As we all know, it can catch up with you all of a sudden later on in the evening.

“This is a proactive campaign to tackle alcohol-related issues. We hope that patrons won’t see this as an imposition, but as a signal that they can enjoy a night out in Wiltshire and feel safe.”
