KIDS were shown that maths can be fun when they were treated to a hands-on workshop yesterday (Monday, August 14) in Trowbridge.

Dave Hickory, an entertainer, magician and balloon modeller put the fun in numbers during a free maths workshop for local youngsters at Innervision Accountants, Roundstone Street.

He created an exciting learning environment by letting the children use dice, elastics and balloons to help explain shapes and numbers to make maths marvellous.

The aim was to let the kids know that it is okay to discuss their thoughts and think critically about maths.

Dave, of Warminster Road, Westbury said: “I think the most important way to learn is for kids to find out the answers themselves. If they are wrong they can work out why it is wrong, which is good for decision making.

“I want to show that it is okay to be wrong and to make mistakes. It is okay to have conversations and not give up.”

The workshop was also to help parents feel more confident about explaining maths to their kids.

Paula Marsh, of Broadmead, Trowbridge has been bringing her eight-year-old son Wes to these workshops since he was four.

She said it is brilliant that the workshop is held during the summer holidays to keep them learning.

“It gets their brains really working.

“They are allowed to show what they really think and he never tells them it is wrong.”
