THE spirit of wartime Britain was resurrected over the weekend as thousands of people flocked to Lacock to take part in the village's most successful Lacock at War show yet.

Over 10,000 people alone passed through the gates to the National Trust village on Saturday as wartime re-enactors, entertainers and vehicles gathered on the green.

"It has been the best show we have ever had," chairman of the West Wilts Area of the Military Vehicle Trust Sylvia Wardle said. "We had 10,000 people at the show on Saturday and that is a figure we have had through the weekend in previous years and another 8,000 people visited on Sunday.

"We are a free show and on Saturday people were still coming through the gates at 4pm, even though we shut an hour later. We have such a good mix of entertainment, living history and education and we didn't need to use the grease we thought we would to fit everyone in!"

The show was so popular this year that the National Trust had to open an additional field for car parking and at one point the car park was closed for an hour to ease congestion.

Period musicians Madeline Brown, the Wiltshire Rock 'n' Rollers, DJ UBX and a fashion show by Lady She and Friends kept visitors entertained in the tents, while MVT member Andy Blackford took to the skies after the show's flypast was cancelled due to a technical glitch.

"Sadly all of the Battle of Britain flights were grounded over the weekend due to a technical fault so we weren't the only ones who were disappointed," Mrs Wardle added.

"One of our club members Andy Blackford has a 1942 Piper J-3 Cub, which was used by the American Army as a spy plane so he did a bit of flying around on Sunday morning much to our surprise and he got a bit adventurous up there!"

The organisers also confirmed that Lacock at War will go ahead next year.
