THE decision to drop plans for another bus gate in Wichelstowe has been welcomed by councillors.

A report on the development will go before a meeting of the cabinet to be held at the Civic Offices this evening.

It includes a statement that there are now no plans to introduce a peak hours bus gate at Redpost Drive.

A bus gate was part of the original planning consent for the Wichelstowe development but concerns had been raised about the detrimental impact such a system would have on traffic.

Councillors Nadine Watts and Jane Milner-Barry (Lab - Old Town and East Wichel) have welcomed the report.

Coun Watts has frequently expressed concerns about the impact on traffic in the Old Town area if the bus gate was to be introduced.

She said: "Both Coun Milner-Barry and I are pleased that the peak hours bus gate on Redpost Drive has recently been reviewed, as the original outline consent for Wichelstowe did include some constraints to be placed here.

"The cabinet paper details that this will not be reviewed again until 2021 when it is expected that the Southern Access Road will be complete.

"We had expressed concerns about the impact on traffic in Old Town if this bus gate had been introduced.

"That there are no plans to introduce the bus gate is good news for many Old Town and East Wichel residents who can continue to use this route which bypasses a lot of the rush hour traffic in the centre of Old Town for at least several years to come."
