A KNITTED Christmas tree, which is sitting pride of place in The Neeld in Chippenham, will help three worthy causes.

Pewsham WI erected the tree on Monday morning after their members spent the last year furiously knitting and crocheting the squares.

"We started last January and we were a bit worried that we wouldn't have enough squares but we are really pleased how it has turned out," Jenny Kelly said. "It looks much better than we ever could have thought and on Friday, during the light switch on, we are inviting people to guess how many squares are on the tree from 4-8pm.

"The money raised will go towards the mayor's charity, St Nicholas School, and then the closest guess will win a prize."

The tree, which will be on display until just after Christmas will also help those in need.

"After Christmas we will dismantle the tree and turn the squares into blankets for the homeless. We are also planning to send some to a neonatal charity for mothers and their babies." she added.
