DEVIZES School's music department is celebrating after being presented with a top trophy by organisers of this year's Eisteddfod.

The school took the Francis Isborn Cup for the best school performance when a highlights concert was staged in Devizes Town Hall on Saturday.

Mayor Nigel Carter presented trophies and awards to the cup winners.

Pianist Anna Hallett took the William Dauntesey Cup for the most outstanding junior performance while the Giles Chivers Cup for the most outstanding senior performance went to violinist and pianist Rachel Stonham. The First Stages Award for the most inspirational performance went to Isabella Lane for verse speaking and the Director's Cup for outstanding achievement over several years went to violinist and pianist Chere Yee Law.

Devizes School head of music Mandy Hodder said: "We had an amazing weekend for the music department. I am so proud of them all." She thanked music tutor Rob Nash for his work.

Among the school winners were the Harmony Choir which took three trophies including the one for best overall choir. Teodora Caliu won the folk song class, Annabel Bigland came second in the same class. Annabel Bigland won the classical repertoire class and the open recital class.

Maddi Butler and Evie Smith won musical theatre classes and Evie and Rosie Boother took a music theatre duet class.

Devizes Eisteddfod musical director Michael Johnson said: "The final item of the concert featured the 40 voices of Staverton Primary School who excelled in the Wiltshire Choir of the Year Competition held in Devizes last May and who brought the concert to a rousing conclusion."

The 2018 Devizes Eisteddfod will be held from November 15 to 17 for music, speech and drama and on November 24 and 25 for dance.The Festival Concert will be on December 1, 2018 in the Town Hall Assembly Room.

Before that there will be a chance to hear 40 more winning performances at two class winners’ concerts on January 28 and February 4 at 3pm in the Assembly Room. Admission free.
