A TEENAGE Barnardo's volunteer from Trowbridge has earned a top award in her support for local children.

Lauren James was named Young Volunteer of the Year in the Barnardo’s Marsh Trust Awards 2017.

The 19-year-old has muscle weakness but has been praised for her work at the charity’s Redland Nursery and Holiday Club in Brook Street, Chippenham.

"The whole team have been really supportive and I’m having the best time," she said.

"The children are so sweet and adorable. Everything they do makes me smile, and that smile stays on my face for the rest of the day.”

Lauren is volunteering with the nursery as part of a supported internship placement after completing a college course in child learning, play and development.

Barnardo's nursery manager Tracey Major, who nominated her for the award, said: "Lauren has overcome many barriers and never lets her disability get in the way of what she wants to achieve," said

"Every week she comes in with a big smile on her face and enjoys supporting the children with a variety of activities including playing outdoors, messy play and local walks, as well as helping with the office administration.

"Lauren is very keen to share her own skills and hobbies with the children and is very excited to bring along her recorder to play music for them. She displays determination and enthusiasm, and is a fantastic role-model for all volunteers."
