A YELLOW weather warning has been issued by the Met office for east Wiltshire as heavy rain turned into snow overnight.

The Met office released a statement which said: "Some roads and railways are likely to be affected by longer journey times due to standing water or snow. There is also a smaller chance that individual homes and businesses could be flooded."

The A346 Salisbury Road in Marlborough near the Marlboruogh Business Park was closed after high winds caused a tree to come down into the road overnight. Wiltshire council cleared the area after police were called to the scene at 8.30am this morning and the road is now open.

A Wiltshire council spokesman said: "We have worked through out the night gritting our primary and secondary network however please take care when travelling."

A BMW and Nissan Qashqai was involved in a crash on the A4361 near the Salthrop Crossroads at Hackpen Hill yesterday morning, and drivers were took to social media to urge others to avoid the area. No one was injured in the collision and police cleared the scene.

A flood warning has been issued around the River Avon between Chippenham and Melksham and Malmsbury to Chippenham after 20mm of rain fell in 24 hours. More rain is expected, which could cause the river to rise in Great Somerford.

Flood Warnings for England said: “Up to 20 mm has fallen over the last 24 hours and levels on the River Avon are rising in response to the rainfall.”

A flood alert was also issued in Minety after levels on the Upper Thames tributaries rose during the heavy rainfall on Boxing Day evening. Flooding on low level land was expected but no houses are believed to be at risk of flooding.

Residents have been urged to remain safe and be aware of their surroundings, describing flood waters as deep and potentially fast flowing.

In other parts of the area including Axford, Pewsey and Tidworth heavy snowfall has caused some roads to be shut.

Residents in Great Bedwyn, Marlborough and Swindon have also reported power cuts after a night of high winds and snowy weather.

A message on the Wiltshire Museum website stated that the museum, on Long Street in Devizes, was closed today due to the bad weather.
