A VILLAGE pub has won top prize in a competition organised by Devizes MP Claire Perry.

The Westbrook at Bromham got the most votes in the contest and took the title of best overall pub and for good measure also took the prize for best pub food.

The Shed Alehouse at Pewsey was best for drinks, The Swan at Wilton best for Families and The Swan at Enford best for communities.

The Westbrook, on the edge of Spye Park, has been run by Kevin and Louise Fraser for the past 18 months. Mr Fraser said: “We were thrilled that people voted for us. It has been non stop here since we took over.”

Ms Perry said: “A huge well done to the winning pubs and thanks to everyone who voted in the awards.

“Championing our local pubs is really important to me as pubs play an incredible role at the heart of many local communities and help create thousands of local jobs.

“I am keen to do everything I can to support our local pubs, breweries and hospitality businesses and I am looking forward to visiting the pubs in the next few weeks to present their winners’ certificates and meeting everyone who voted.”

Gordon Edwards, of the Shed Alehouse in Pewsey, added: “We were very pleased to win the Best Drinks category, we pride ourselves on serving quality drinks and to have this recognised was very special.

“There was stiff competition and we have a much smaller voting circle due to the size of The Shed so we felt very honoured to have won. We were also Community Pub runner-up.”

Mr Edwards also won Beer of the festival at Swindon CAMRA Beer Festival last with ale Minal Tap, brewed using hops grown in the village of Mildenhall.
