SWINDON Town boss Phil Brown praised his side’s ‘top drawer’ finishing against Cambridge United, which helped the visitors record a 3-1 win away from home.

It’s the first time Town have scored three goals at an away game since beating Crewe Alexandra 3-0 on December 23 last year.

Luke Norris headed past Cambridge goalkeeper David Forde after 15 minutes following Chris Hussey’s bursting run down the left before Marc Richards calmly headed Town’s second into the net from Matt Taylor’s free kick a third of the way into the second half.

Though United hit back through Uche Ikpeazu, Richards netted his second from the penalty spot to record a comfortable and deserved two-goal win for Town to mark Brown’s first game in charge.

He said: “The finishing was first class for me today. The commitment impressed me too.

“Not just to the cause of winning the game today but the work in the week. It was a disappointing result last week and Matt (Taylor) felt hurt by it, that’s the type of person I want around.

“I’ve took every bit of information he gave me and used it to make the team selection and our tactics.

“That second goal sums Matt and Marc (Richards) up, they led the attitude in the team.

“Everything about today’s performance was first class, the only downside was the goal.

“I’m screaming at them for a clean sheet mentality and the goal made it a little bit more nervous and exciting, but our third goal came at the right time.”

Brown was worried about causing ‘information overload’ on his players prior to the game.

But the new boss confirmed he was pleased how his starting 11 took in all his pre-match information to put Town’s promotion push back on the right tracks.

“It looked like the players took all the tactical information in,” said Brown.

“We know Cambridge try to get the ball into their strikers. The midfield four had to be alert.

“We utilised Chris Hussey, I’m delighted to get 75 minutes out of him today.

“And we utilised Ben Purkiss as well who was playing in his normal position.

“It was a case of round pegs in round holes today, everybody was happy with their positions.”

And fans appeared to take to Brown well during and after the game, chanting his name regularly before applauding the 58-year-old as he left the field with three points in the bag.

Brown said: “It’s a good situation for me to come into.

“We have two away games, two difficult games. We’ve won the first part and we’ve got to go Exeter next week.

“Not jumping ahead of myself but if we win both games you’d hope the County Ground will be rocking.

“That’s my challenge. We’ve now got to complete the second part of that challenge and beat Exeter.”
