JERMAINE McGlashan has become Swindon Town’s first signing of the summer after boss Phil Brown swooped to bring his former Southend United midfielder to the Energy Check County Ground on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old can play in a variety of positions across midfield and has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Town.

Brown first signed McGlashan for the Shrimpers back in June 2016, with the two spending 18 months together before the former Premier League boss left Roots Hall in January this year.

In total, McGlashan made 70 appearances for Southend, scoring four goals, but his career at the club stagnated after Brown’s departure.

He made just four substitute appearances over the final three-and-a-half months of the season under new boss Chris Powell and was not offered fresh terms by United following the expiration of his contract.

After spending his early career in non-league, McGlashan joined then League Two side Aldershot Town in the summer of 2010 and made his professional debut in August of that year in a League Cup game against Watford at the age of 22.

He went on to play 75 times for Aldershot before signing for Cheltenham Town in January 2012, helping them reach the League Two play-off final at the end of that season where they were beaten by Crewe Alexandra at Wembley.

After making 116 appearances and two-and-a-half years at Whaddon Road, McGlashan got a taste of League One football in 2014 when he signed for Gillingham, spending two seasons with the club before signing for Brown at Southend in 2016.

McGlashan was at the County Ground yesterday to help Swindon unveil their new home kit for the coming campaign.

Town have opted for red shirts, shorts and socks, courtesy of kit manufacturer PUMA.

Recently, Swindon have worn white shorts, but will wear all-red next season, featuring a v-neck two-tone striped shirt.

The 2018-19 season also signifies the 50th anniversary of the club’s famous League Cup win over Arsenal, which is recognised in a patch at the bottom of the shirt.

Shirts will be available in adult, youth and mini-kit sizes, priced at £44.99 for adults, £34.99 for children and £37.50 for mini-kits, although no on-sale date has yet been revealed.
