SWINDON Town manager Phil Brown says every effort is being put in to ensure more new faces follow Jermaine McGlashan to the Energy Check County Ground, but has urged patience over his summer recruitment drive.

McGlashan was unveiled as Town’s first new signing ahead of the 2018-19 season on Monday, with the midfielder having penned a two-year deal after arriving from Brown’s former club, Southend United, on a free transfer.

Negotiations are ongoing between Brown and several other players about possible moves to Swindon, with the squad due to report back in for the start of their pre-season training programme on Monday.

However, Brown admits that no deal ever comes to a swift resolution and has moved to calm concerns over a lack of transfer activity so far.

“Talks are ongoing and they will be right the way through pre-season, to tell the truth,” Brown told the Advertiser.

“In an ideal world, we all want our stock in place come the first day of pre-season training, and I know supporters get a little bit anxious and concerned and think are we working hard enough and doing are jobs properly, but it really is a difficult time.

“And certainly when the World Cup is on, all eyes are focussed on that. People are not really thinking about the next Premier League season or the EFL campaign.

“I think when the fixtures come out, which they do on Thursday, it starts whetting everyone’s whistle and getting everyone interested.

“I am trying to relax the supporters. Everything that can physically, mentally and financially be achieved at this moment in time is being done to try to get two or three more players in, but we just have to be patient.”

Monday’s deal marked the second time Brown has signed McGlashan, with the former Premier League boss also swooping for his services when in charge of Southend in League One back in the summer of 2016.

Prior to that, the 30-year-old had two seasons at fellow third tier side Gillingham, and Brown says players with experience of a higher level are exactly what he is after.

“When I signed Jermaine for Southend we have already been promoted and I wanted players who had played at a higher level,” said Brown.

“I am in a different ball park now. We want to get promoted from the second division but we also want players that can play in the first division ideally, and Jermaine fits the bill.”
