DAVID Farrell says he is hoping to install some of his own values into Swindon Town’s youth academy after being named as the new boss for the U18s.

The former Peterborough United midfielder is set to start work at the Energy Check County Ground on Sunday, July 1.

The 46-year-old began his career at non-league Redditch United, before signing for his boyhood team Aston Villa.

Farrell didn’t quite make the grade at Villa Park, but says he learned a valuable lesson from the experience, claiming that hard work allowed him to step up from non-league.

Hard work and determination are two of the many core values Farrell is looking to implement into the Town youngsters, who he believes have a head start by already being at the club, instead of having to negotiate a way through non-league football.

“I have always been very resilient, that comes from my upbringing,” he said.

“I was never good enough, I wasn’t a scholar or anything like that – I came up through playing non-league football.

“You can never give up and I think it is important to always have that resilience with you as a footballer.

“There are more lows in the game than there are highs, so you need to be ready for that because if you’re not, you’re going to struggle to make a career in the game.

“As a player I went from Redditch to Villa, my hometown team and that was a massive step up but I know what it feels like to play as a home grown player.”

During his playing career, Farrell was surrounded with players such as Cyrille Regis, Dwight Yorke and current England manager Gareth Southgate.

The former Villa man says he is looking forward to getting back on the training pitch and getting fully integrated into the club.

“I was briefly there with Gareth Southgate. He came as I was going so I do kind of know him,” said Ferrell, who added that he is looking forward to meeting the rest of the club staff.

“I had a chat with him a few months ago when we met at St George’s Park, so I know him in passing. Hopefully he does well at the World Cup.

“I haven’t met Lee Peacock (head of youth coaching) yet, I know of him. It will be good to meet everyone, that is why I left Peterborough so I could be in a new environment and meet new people.”
