AFTER securing the club’s first ever Southern League win, Highworth Town boss Jeff Roberts admitted he was proud of his team.

Their win was a slender one as they were 1-0 winners at home to AFC Totton after Ash Edenborough was able to slot home in the 20th minute to settle their nerves.

However, Edenborough increased the pressure on the home side in the second half as the visitors looked for a way back into the game when he was shown a straight red card in the 50th minute.

But the Worthians were able to hold on for the win to the relief of the home support at the Save on Tyres Stadium.

“Totton are a very experienced side, they have been in the league for years and pushed a little bit last season,” said Roberts.

“It took us a little bit of tension off of us to get the first goal in the bag, and the first win too.

“When I spoke to people in the week a few people said we would learn our lesson in the Southern League.

“I thought we conducted ourselves very well on Saturday. In the first 45 minutes we didn’t let them settle and we were a little bit more physical than we normally have to be.

“We had a good opportunity to score in the first 10 minutes but we scuffed that wide, then Edenborough got the goal.

“They had their five minutes of pressure but I think we conducted ourselves very well. We made it uncomfortable for them.

“The second half was very different, we were playing with 10 men and that put us under a lot of pressure.

“We dealt with it very well and we caught them on the counter attack but overall, over the 90 minutes I think we deserved the three points.”

Before the game, Roberts was handed a triple boost after re-signing Callum Parsons as well as adding Ryan Morgan and Jake Robinson from Wantage Town, Swindon Supermarine and Slimbridge respectively.

The manager is happy with his additions, but plans to add a few more to ensure his side are ready for the rigours of the Southern League.

“We are still looking for another couple. We need a stronger squad so we can compete and I think we are two or three short from where we need to be,” he added.

“For me, Saturday was a delight to watch the lads and I was full of praise for them after the game it was a good day.”
