House builder goes bust

A HOUSE-BUILDER involved in major projects in west Wiltshire has gone bust leaving one of them part-finished.

Bellfield Homes, based in Bishop Sutton in Bristol, has left a 21-apartment development in Duke Street, Trowbridge, unfinished after failing to pay its contractors.

Rumours of the firm's financial troubles started last month when it pulled out of a deal to redevelop the former Bowyers offices in Stallard Street.

But despite being contacted by the Wiltshire Times on July 30 and 31 company bosses denied it was going into liquidation. When the Wiltshire Times called the offices the next day, on August 1, a recorded message said the business had gone into administration as of July 31 and the offices were now closed.

It said the administrator had a list of all creditors for the business and would be writing to each of them. There is speculation that the company has debts running at about £500,000 to other businesses and contractors in west Wiltshire.

This includes about £300,000 to one builders' merchant and up to £15,000 with another, £90,000 to one plumber and £100,000 to other tradesmen.

Bellfield Homes had houses and apartments for sale in Southcroft Prospect in Corsham, Marlborough Court in Westbury and two developments in Radstock, along with Duke Street in Trowbridge.

It was also responsible for a housing development in Lowbourne Place, Melksham. It had planned to build another set of 16 new houses in The Meadows in Trowbridge along with others in Winford near Bristol and Somerton in Somerset.

Company bosses said last week that it had pulled out of the redevelopment of the Bowyers factory offices in Stallard Street by mutual consent with the owner.

Bellfield Homes Ltd, which was set up in December 2006, is still listed as an active company with Companies House but its listing shows it has never filed any accounts with them, a requirement by law.

You would think WWDC would make it their business to check the background of such companies before giving them permission to build. It is only a matter of weeks since a similar thing happened with the developers of the Mr Crushmore site.

Trowbridge came all the way through the second world war with hardly a scratch and now look at it! It looks more like London did in the Blitz than a county town in the millennium.

That should have said 'Mt' Crushmore and 'New' millennium.

Once again, leaving the fate of our counties future in the hands of unmonitored 3rd parties.

What exactly do the council do?

Sounds like slippy shouldered leaders willing to take pay packets but no responsibility.

I hope you're not suggesting they might take the odd back-hander? You wicked, wicked person. Could be right though.

Isnt trowbridge doing well!! 2 failed sites, 1 half built and one looking like Iraq.

Now all we need is for the former wincanton site to go pop, just as they've knocked it down.

Then we'll have a lovely collection - former tesco site, peter black, the ushers site, duke street and if we're lucky, the wincanton site!

Lets congratulate the council for one thing though - knocking some old bogs down and making an area the size of a postage stamp look pretty for the drunks, pigeons and trolley throwers.

Oh, i nearly forgot - and for replacing the bulbs in the multi-storey, and closing half of it off for a lick of paint.

So, whats for demolition next.......county hall maybe???

How long before some squatters move in and set up home for the winter ? And maybe a few of the travelling community too ?
A roof over their heads and no Council Tax either !!!

Does anyone know details of the official receiver or insolvency company dealing with this?

The trouble is, while we all like to see property developers and estate agents go down the drain, we have to think of the poor folk what work for them.

00sooz, a quick search has found no results for an administration service for bellfield.
Their website seems to be business as usual which is strange.
Might be worth emailing them on
enquiries@bellfieldg
roup.co.uk
for more info.

You can't blaim the Council for everything. As for checking business backgrounds, that would add huge delays at extra cost. What a stupid comment.

It takes a couple of minutes to do an online check via the Company House website.

What a stupid comment.

You would be the first person to complain if the Council told you that you couldn't have planning permission because you finances aren't right.

Anyway do you really want to live in a 'big brother' society. Where would you stop with this endless checking of peoples or companies statuses?

People like you are making me want to change the way I vote from yellow to blue.
