Bromham end leaders’ unbeaten run

4:10pm Thursday 30th October 2008

BROMHAM took the honours in the Premier Division of the Wiltshire League when they ended the unbeaten run of leaders New College, beating the Swindon side 2-1.

New College had won all nine of their previous games and secretary Eric Stott said, “ All good things come to an end, Bromham didn’t let us play and they were well organised.”

A slip by a College defender, whose back pass to the goalkeeper fell short, allowed Jack Heard to intercept and put Bromham into the lead after 15 minutes.

Play then remained fairly even until just before the break when Nathan Blackford equalised to send the sides in even at the break.

A long ball out of defence midway through the second half fell to Heard who lobbed the ball over the keeper’s head to regain the lead for the home side who defended their advantage well until the final whistle.

Bromham manager Ben Howe said: “We are booming again, the lads played for each other and worked hard, we have had a bit of a transformation over the last few weeks and hopefully we can start stringing a few results together.

“New College are a good young side, but we nicked a couple of goals and defended our lead well in the latter stages of the game.”

Defeat for the College enabled Melksham Town Reserves to take over at the top of the table following their 6-0 victory at Bradford Town Reserves.

Melksham boss Tim Spear said it was an outstanding performance from his side against a strong Bradford Town outfit, adding: “The lads were excellent and fully deserved their victory.”

Simon Gillett, who was sent off the precious week, made amends by scoring four goals, with Amelio Menghini and Dave Clayton scoring one apiece.

Calne Town Reserves remain the only unbeaten side in the section after their 3-0 away win over FC Chippenham Youth, Scott Evans, Mark Dolman and John O’Meara on target.

Second in the table Purton were also beaten, going down 2-1 at Trowbridge Town Reserves, Dean Murden and Joe Straddling netting for the home side and Dave Rendle for the visitors.

Purton boss Stef Kucynski said he was very disappointed with the result, adding: “Our forwards missed loads of chances, I’m glad my life don’t depend on them the way they are playing at the moment.”

Devizes Town Reserves staged a dramatic recover at Shrewton Town Reserves after having a player sent off early in the game and then going three goals down soon after the start of the second half. However goals from Jamie Muir, Simon Drewitt, Nick Taylor and James Lloyd-Davies saw them go into a 4-3 lead with less than five minutes to go. The home side then had a player sent off and then drew level with the last kick of the game.

Marlborough Town, who found goals hard to come by earlier in the season, rattled in five against visitors Warminster Town Reserves, who replied twice, six of the goals coming in the first 45 minutes. Steve Dean (2), Dean Hughes, Arran Maximan and Ricky Flanagan were on target for the home side.

Westbury United Reserves were held to a 1-1 draw by visitors Westside, Marc Lanfear giving United the lead with the Swindon side equalising soon after.

Last season champions Wroughton gained a 1-0 victory over visitors Corsham Town Reserves, thanks to a first half goal from Lee Curtis.

Wroughton manager Kevin Cook was not too impressed with the victory, adding: “I thought we were pretty poor, we missed a lot of chances and we will play a lot better than that and get beaten. Still a win is a win and it’s another three points.”
