Police deter layby doggers

9:35am Wednesday 5th November 2008

POLICE in Warminster believe they have put a stop to sexual activities at a dogging site near the town after publicising the problem and increasing their patrols.

The wooded area behind the layby off Black Dog Hill near Chapmanslade, off the A36, was mainly being used by married men looking for sex with other men.

The problem first came to police attention when members of the public noticed excessive amounts of litter at the site, including used condoms, plastic gloves and tissues.

Then dog walkers noticed men engaging in sexual activities, but Inspector David Minty, of Warminster and Westbury police, has confirmed these incidents have now stopped. He said: “We haven’t made any arrests in the area and we believe the activity has ceased due to the help of the Wiltshire Times publicising the problem and police patrols.

“If arrests can be avoided by informing the offenders how their behaviour is affecting people’s lives then we will take that route, but we will make arrests if we need to.”

The inspector confirmed that patrols would continue in Black Dog Hill to ensure the area is monitored.
