A charity for deaf children in Wiltshire is volunteering its services to sign carols at the switch on of Chippenham’s Christmas lights on November 21.
Moonrakers Deaf Children’s Society, which is affiliated to the National Deaf Children's Society, will be signing carols played through a PA system at Emery Gate shopping centre before and after the lights switch on.
The group will comprise adults and children, some of whom are deaf and some who are parents of deaf children.
Rachel Humphries, a committee member, said: “We are hoping to raise money for various events that we are planning for all deaf children in Wiltshire throughout the year. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to mix with others like themselves in a fun environment and build new friendships.”
Moonrakers held its first Halloween party on November 1 which was hailed a great success. Around 25 deaf children from all over Wiltshire, including their siblings, enjoyed carving pumpkins, decorating cakes and biscuits, making spooky crafts, eating dead man’s fingers and pumpkin pizzas and playing Halloween games.
Approximately15 people are involved in the charity and the group meets in Chippenham, although members come from all over Wiltshire. The next meeting is on January 14 2009 at the Pheasant Inn.
Kate Revere, secretary for the society, said: “We are hoping to develop a strong network and fun social activities where deaf children and their families can meet; this is irrespective of the level of the child's deafness or method of communication.”
Moonrakers is holding its annual Christmas party for deaf children on December 7 at Cherhill Village Hall.
