A 53-YEAR-OLD woman knocked down by a mobility scooter while running errands in Melksham is considering taking legal action.

Margaret Scott, from Seend, had just finished work in Chippenham and had driven to Melksham to go to the bank, when she was run over on the pavement in Church Street.

Mrs Scott said she recalls little of what happened, but suffered a fractured collarbone and extensive bruising to her shoulder and eye.

She said: “I remember hardly anything. I left work in Chippenham at around lunchtime and arrived in Melksham at about 1.50pm to go to Lloyds Bank to pay a bill.”

The mother-of-one said: “I was almost outside Kingstons Estate Agents - that was the last thing I remember.

“I do remember waking up in the estate agents as they had sat me down and there was a paramedic there.”

Mrs Scott said her daughter Diane, 19, was informed of what had happened and she was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath where she was treated for her injuries.

The clerical assistant, who works at The Bridge Centre in Chippenham, said: “I’m just worried that if this was to happen to an elderly person or a child then the outcome could have been even worse.

“I think people who drive these scooters have to be very mindful of pedestrians.”

Mrs Scott said she doesn’t know the man who ran her down and police are unable to give her his details because of the Data Protection Act. Police have told her they are unable to take action.

Mrs Scott is now exploring her options for making some kind of personal injury claim.

She said: “I haven't made any firm plans about what I am going to do, but I am looking into pursuing some kind of claim.

“This is the sort of thing you really don’t expect to happen to you, those scooters go so slowly that you don’t ever think you could be hit by one.”
