Charity loses its battle for funds

IT HAS helped hundreds of thousands of pensioners in more than 50 years of service.

But by the end of March, Age Concern Swindon will no longer be able to lend wheelchairs or give advice to the town’s elderly.

The charity has lost its battle to find additional funds after becoming unable to fund its share of the national charity’s pensions deficit.

Director Jo Osorio said: “What this means is our organisation has no option but close at the end of March.

“It is very sad for the organisation and very sad for old people in Swindon.

“Our staff are personally affected as well.”

The charity employs 18 people in Swindon as well as having about 100 volunteers who help elderly people get information, claim benefits and borrow wheelchairs and heaters when needed.

The closure of the service could see the town’s pensioners missing out on millions of pounds’ worth of benefits.

“We are now in discussion with the council about whether there is a possibility of keeping some of the services we provided for older people,” said Jo.

“At the moment we don’t know at all what services can be kept, if any.

“We had been doing some work with the Citizens Advice Bureau, so we anticipate that through the Citizens Advice Bureau that may be saved.

“We are going to be working very hard to make sure we have that on-going commitment to older people.

“There is a very large range of things we do at the moment to help people. We offer advice and our befriending service looks out for people on their own. We also offer benefits advice and raised £1m in benefits last year.”

Trustees have spent the last nine months trying to find a solution to efforts to fund the charity.

Age Concern Swindon’s finances have come under immense pressure because of a retirement benefits scheme run by the national organisation.

There were hopes Age Concern Wiltshire could run Swindon services, but said in a statement released yesterday: “On the basis of the due diligence and the feasibility study carried out by an independent consultant, Age Concern Wiltshire has decided, at this time, not to take on any of the services currently provided by Age Concern Swindon.

“Age Concern Wiltshire has taken particular account of the uncertainty of future funding for services in Swindon and the need to focus our resources on the consolidation of our recently restructured services.”

Age Concern Swindon’s chairman Derek Benfield said: “People benefited in the last year to £1.2m.

“Our trustees have reluctantly reached this conclusion following more than nine months’ deliberation.  “After nearly 60 years of ‘old people’s welfare’ and 40 as an independent organisation providing vital services to older people locally, we had hoped a transfer to other providers would be possible to safeguard the future for at least some of our services.”

This news comes on a day that the newspapers report that the tax payer has had to increase payments into MPs pensions by 25% over the last five years.

It's good to know that our MPs are sharing the pain of Labour's policies, NOT!......after all, everyone knows that pension shortfalls are largely due to Gordon pillaging the pensions of every hard working person in the country.

This time we have a clear sign of the victoms of such a policy, no doubt as soon as Gordon tells her what she thinks, Anne will come out with some garbled speech about how this is SBC's fault and that the government is 'working hard' for old people.

Isn't it quite ironic that a retirement pension issue has closed down a service for Pensioners

The sad news that Age Concern Swindon is closing is distressing for the vulnerable older population in Swindon. Having worked with Age Concern we know the very good work that they do. The wheelchair, loan heater and befriending service will be hard to replace.

Regrettably, other organisations in the town are not immune to the funding problems that are referred to in the article. Swindon Borough Council has placed all the money it has for advice services with one provider from April.

The Wiltshire Law Centre has lost all its Council funding, which allowed us to help people regardless of the level of their income. We never charge for our service, but due to the restrictions placed on us by our sole remaining funder, we can now only assist those people whose incomes are low enough to qualify for free advice.

Older residents of Swindon, eligible for free advice that would like to know what benefits they may be entitled to, can get help from the Wiltshire Law Centre. Over 20% of our clients are in the age 50 plus bracket and we have extensive experience of securing benefits for older clients.

Please contact us on 01793 486926 and we will do all we can to help you. If you are not eligible for our free service we can refer to you to the Citizens Advice Bureau or other agencies for help.

Said Age Concern.

Well that explains that then does
it not.
They were doing what the Council
did not like. Helping people to
claim benefits they were entitled
to,but were NOT told about by
unscrupulous authorities.
I hope all us old uns remember this
at the next Election.

This is very sad news. Jo and his team have provided a fantastic service to Swindon's pensioners over the last 60 years. The loss of this service will now place ever more pressure on Swindon's few remaining similar organisations, such as Swindon Carers, and Citizens Advice Bureau, as well as additional stress to the already over-stretched Adult Social Care department at the Council.

"over-stretched Adult Social Care Dept" - When i enquired about help for my Aunt I was asked by the receptionist "does she have a microwave? - YES. Does she know how to use the microwave? - YES - sorry she isn't eligible for any care services.
She might be able to use a microwave but removing hot food and taking it to the table is another matter.
As BWB says they are a victim of their own sucess.
