Today is the worst day of the year for car accidents, according to a survey based on drivers' insurance claims.

Bad weather and less daylight traditionally make January a more dangerous time to be on the road.

A study of claims received by insurer esure shows motorists are almost twice as likely to have an accident in January compared with the rest of the year.

The company gets more claims for accidents on January 18 than any other day.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said: "Winter is a notoriously bad time for motorists with January the most treacherous month for drivers.

"Motorists should take extra care and must adapt their driving style according to the road and weather conditions.

"Allowing extra time in the morning to prepare their cars and extra time for their actual journeys are both crucial.

"Common sense needs to prevail to reduce the number of accidents during winter - slow down, stay alert, stay calm and stay in control."

The survey, based on claims from 2003 to 2007, show the safest day to drive is December 30.
