We’ll be back and ready for action

HONDA says it will be back producing cars on June 1, insisting the company has a future in Swindon.

As thousands of workers completed their final shifts before the four-month shutdown yesterday, the car giant was quick to reassure them that they will have jobs to go back to.

“Make no mistake – come Monday, June 1 we shall be back and ready for action,” said Paul Ormond, general manager of PR and corporate affairs.

“This might be an extremely difficult time for Honda and the rest of the country but we shall work through it and despite what some people might say Honda has a future in Swindon producing cars.

“In fact the future of Honda is assured. We have just launched a new hybrid car and later this year, our most popular model, the Jazz, will be built at Swindon giving us three major models for the town.”

Mr Ormond said it had been a difficult time for the 3,700 people working at the plant who he said had been influenced by bad news and rumour upon rumour since the credit crunch began.

“It is going to be tough for the next few months but we shall be doing the best we can to look after the associates,” Mr Ormond said.

Dave Hodgetts, senior director of planning and business administration at Honda UK, said the company was doing all it could to protect jobs.

Mr Hodgetts, who has been with the company for 18 years and will remain at work for the next four months, said: “We will be trying to protect their jobs – that’s our priority for the whole period.

“After the four-month break, the plan is for all the staff to come back and their jobs will be secure.

“No one could forecast the impact of the recession on the industry. We’ve had to take this severe action.”

Honda said earlier this week that it would decline the Government’s offer of £1.3bn in financial help for the UK’s car industry Mr Ormond, said: “We welcome the UK Government’s support and we hope that it will help to ease the current financial problems in this business sector and stimulate the market.

“At Honda, we are an independent company and are responsible for our own operation. Therefore we have not asked for any Government financial assistance and we will continue to manage this situation by ourselves.”

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson had said the measures offered a significant boost to the industry but denied the Government was offering a bail-out or a blank cheque.

He said the car industry had been in the frontline of the economic downturn, with output falling faster and further than in any other sector.

BMW, which also has a factory in Swindon, has said it will see what is on offer from the Government and if any strings will be attached before accepting any financial help.

Vauxhall and Ford are likely to take up any options which might be open to them.

Editor and staff take note, thats enough about Honda now, its getting as bad as the 3 pages of drivel you print about STFC every day, ever thought of doing a Bath Chronicle and going weekly? Just a idea...

Enough of Honda. Let's start on BMW now.

BMW ... "will see what is on offer from the Government and if any strings will be attached before accepting any financial help. "

So the Germans just want my tax money without strings. It beggars belief.

Hey, maybe if these big manufacturers are crushed, we might be able to start Brisith car companies again.

Captain Sensible - nobody is forcing you to read this.

Dave Hodgetts - the govt money is for the benefit of the WORKERS please remember that while you are sat in your office being paid for the whole four months.

Indeed, poor old Honda only made £745 million profit in the last quarter, shell we ask the ex-Woolies employees to have a whip-round for them.

Perhaps Honda's cars aren't selling because they are a tad overpriced c/w equivalent Ford/Vauxhall/etc ?

I have lots of friends and family that work at Honda, I am also keen to find out what is happening. I think what Honda are doing is brave and I hope it turns out for everyone. This is a big story because it affects so many people, not just the Honda workers, the other factories that supply parts too. Stop reading the stories and moaning about them. In fact, if you don't like Swindon, move!

People may still buy cars due to personal circumstances, I personally have got the money to buy a new car if I want to, but I don't need one. I like Honda cars, they are well built and worth the money.

Hope all the Honda workers get through these times.

what about the ~60% loss in Honda profits reported in the last quarter? check your figures, profit has fallen from billions to millons. Don't see how Woolworths is relevant to the motor manufacturing industry.

Ford/Vauxhall etc ...... what are their sales figures c.f. Honda? are Ford and Vauxhall doing ok then? Is Honda going down because of overpricing? Haven't heard much positive news about Ford, particularly from their US base .... please explain further, it seems like I might need a transfer to Ellesmere Port?

Just curious, do any of the people on here who constantly criticise the editorial content of the Evening Advertiser ever actually buy it? If you don't then why do you think your comments here should have any influence on it?

I admit, I don't buy it, but at least I appreciate that they allow us to comment here for free. I certainly don't think that as a free-loader I should have any influence on the content!

I couldn't give a toss about Melinda Messenger and her ice escapades, but the Evening Advertise is providing this web site for free, so if you don't like it then **** off, or better still create your own local web site with what you think is more appropriate content!

Late night was it?
You managed to miss both points.
Ah well, point 1 was that a profit of £795 million is still half decent, regardless of the same period the year before, and dwarfs the amount being spent to support ages for the closedown.
Point 2 was that Ford etc vehicles are a lot cheaper than Honds in the showrooms, perhaps if Honda got bold in there they might start showing some progress.
We can hope.
Oh yes, and the Woolies comment was a thing called 'sarcasm'

Everyone has the right to voice their opinion on this site regardless if they buy the Adver or not. You yourself have spouted off some drivel, but thats freedom of speech. No need to tell someone to ****off because you dont like their opinion. Get over it!
