Wiltshire's Shelley Rudman tells of sadness at kit theft

Wiltshire's Olympic ice queen Shelley Rudman has been left feeling hot under the collar after thieves burgled her home and used her keys to steal her car with some of her skeleton bob racing kit inside.

Rudman, 28, won the hearts of people not only in her home village of Pewsey but the whole of Britain when she won the country’s only medal of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

The sportswoman has been left seething after thieves took her car that contained her training kit including the helmet she wore when she won her Olympic medal.

One thing they did not steal however was her treasured silver medal that is under lock and key in what Rudman described as “another secure location”.

The former Pewsey Vale School girl now lives in Sheffield with her partner, the former skeleton bob world champion Kristan Bromley, and their two year old daughter Ella.

She had just returned to Yorkshire from a visit to her parents, Jack and Josie Rudman, in Pewsey, when the car was stolen from outside her home.

She said: “They took my Olympic helmet, my racing gloves and my training kit that I use at the gym.”

Rudman added: “When you are an athlete you pretty much live out of your car.

“I’d just got back from seeing my mum and dad so the car was packed and I am quite upset about it.

“The people who have stolen my car are probably just going to burn my car and helmet and my personal things and that is really annoying.”

Rudman had her kit in the car because while visiting her parents she used the opportunity to go training in Bath. But it wasn’t only her kit that went. She said: “We had literally just bought Ella a brand new pram and car seat which went, along with a lot of her favourite books and toys which I’m really frustrated about.

“I’m now without a car so getting to training, getting Ella to nursery, travelling around the country for various trips has now become a nightmare.”
