Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found near a church in Avebury yesterday where hundreds headed for the summer solstice celebrations.

Detectives are trying to establish the identity of the man, who was in his 40s. His body was found by members of the public in the grounds of St James' Church in Avebury, Wiltshire, this morning.

The people who discovered the body alerted patrolling officers who had been brought in to police the solstice celebrations at the town's ancient stone circle.

Wiltshire Police said they are not treating the death as suspicious and stressed it was not linked to the solstice celebrations.

Detective Sergeant Simon Pope said: "It is not believed that the man is local and inquiries are ongoing to establish his identity and alert his next of kin.

"The church and the immediate area were cordoned off this morning while police investigated the circumstances surrounding the death.

"The area was reopened this afternoon.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and is not connected to any of the solstice activities in the area."
