Nightmare ends for Devizes family

Eighteen months of hell have come to an end for residents of Snuff Court in Devizes.

Since the beginning of last year they have had to put up with the view and light from their rear windows being blocked by giant blue metal screens that have shut off the development to the public.

But worse than that, they have rarely had an uninterrupted night’s sleep free from late-night revellers banging on the metal shuttering.

Four-year-old Jake Edmonds was among the residents to be badly affected by the noise. “I couldn’t get to sleep,” he said.

His father Ian said: “It has been a nightmare. We have been kept awake every night for the last 18 months by this. Poor Jake was in a bad way. He would wake up shivering. It was awful to see him.

“We asked the developers to do something about it, but they said there was nothing they could do. Some nights he has gone in to sleep with his mum, Fiona, and I have had to sleep on the sofa.

“We came back from holiday last week to see the screens were down. It was a wonderful homecoming present. It’s a great relief.”

The famous Polly Tea Rooms, which started up in Marlborough and now have branches in Salisbury, Wilton and Cirencester as well, is opening its new branch in the main frontage of the new building today.

Developers Gaiger Brothers are hoping that now that unit is up and running, others will soon be let.

Project manager James Gaiger said: “We are still marketing the other units. There has been some interest expressed but so far there is nothing definite.

“Now the building is more or less complete we are hoping it will spark more interest.”

The Polly Tea Rooms, which is employing 15 full and part-time staff, takes up a third of the new building. The remainder of the retail space will be shared among three to five units.

There are 24 flats in the new development, which are also being marketed though none have been let or sold yet.
