Archaeologist warns of threat from development

PRECIOUS archaeological treasures could be destroyed by a proposed 12,000-home development to the east of Swindon.

This is the view of an expert who has been speaking out against the Eastern Development Area (EDA) for more than a decade.

Houses, community facilities, schools and shops are planned for the EDA, on land between Wanborough and South Marston.

Plans for development on the site were first mooted by developer David Wilson Estates in 1998, when they were criticised by Bryn Walters, director of the Swindon-based Association for Roman Archaeology.

Now Mr Walters says that, 11 years later, the proposals still threaten archaeological gems in the area.

He said: “At the time we were criticised by the developers for raising concerns about the potential archaeological sites that could be destroyed. They said it was too early to raise those issues but here we are 11 years later and they still haven’t been dealt with.

“The whole area is scattered with sites of all eras. From neolithic to bronze, Roman, Saxon and Medieval. We have a huge Roman town which the original developers acknowledged but which we now know extends over a far greater area.

“There are a lot of really exciting things in that area and there may be more we don’t know about yet.”

Mr Walters said he had evidence of extensive Roman developments adjacent to Dorcan and towards Coate, where a bronze-age site could be. He said there is also a possible Roman villa site at South Marston extending to more than an acre.

He said “I would like to see the whole EDA project scrapped. It is a ludicrous plan which is being imposed on the town by the Government. Nobody wants it and it could do a lot of damage.”

Wiltshire’s county archaeologist Melanie Pomeroy-Kellinger agreed with Mr Walters’ concerns over the site.

She said: “There have been a lot of potential sites identified there. There needs to be more detailed studies to assess exactly what the issues are for this site.

“Until we have seen an environmental statement I can’t really give an opinion on any development.

“The masterplan that has been developed does give some protection. There are a number of constraints and archaeology is one of those constraints.”

Coun Peter Greenhalgh, the cabinet member in charge of the development, said: “We are aware of these concerns and before any development took place we would need to look more closely at the archaeological impacts.

“There have been cases, such as in Abbey Meads 10 years ago, where a Roman sanctuary was found and now that site will never be built on.

“I would ask that anyone who is a specialist in this field to make a submission to the council so that it can be considered as part of the consultation on the EDA.”

I am beginning to think who cares anymore. As long as we preserve significant sites of interest why keep on about every bit of broken pottery that's found. There is only so much history that can be relevant or interesting.

Why do we need to know so much about people who lived in this area before. We know that from the broken pottery and low walls at most sites the Romans were very short and clumsy. Is that not enough?

The Lotmead site is well known of. it,s allready had a duel carriage way built through it and it,s at the end of a land rain that backs up and floods regularly.

I have metal detected that area several times over many years and the most your going to find is a horse shoe,or a nail, all modern crap and the od shard of pottery.

This is simply a red herring to try to stop the necessary constrution of homes to increase the profits of a few.

We need house,s we need our kids in decent modern houses, not the slums of old town and the manchester rd area, they should all be redeveloped under a slum clearance order.

I am also worried that immigrunts are going to use the new canal to get into england undetected.

We shouldnt support that either.

Get real NINBY,s there going to build a house somewere near you, and another road, and street lights and Oh, a school, got to have one of those, the trafic wont jam up the same without one.

Just out of pure interest does anyone know which area of Swindon Bryn the roman archaeologist lives in.

Oh Bryn, when they built the Cirencester bypass, roman coffins, some still occupied, were unceremoniously bulldozed to the side.

That’s Cirencester the capital of the Roman Empire in England.

We probably know more about the Romans than the Italians.

Anyway. Wot did the Romans ever do for us mate.

We don’t even have executions anymore, crucifixions were all the rage, a good stoning couldn’t be beat on a Saturday, always attracted a crowd, but apart from that NOTHING.

A for the other site mentioned I also tried for years to find it, never ever did I think it was up on the hill it was found on, but you didn’t know it was there either, the builders bulldozers found it.

I believe he lives in the Town Centre - an area that was lacking in ancient archaeology when the Victorians built most of the houses there.

one of my family metal detects some of the land around the wanborough and south marston area and could show you many roman coins found from all over it , the finds are recorded with the necessary people .

there was a roman settlement in south marston , my father knows exactly where its located , alfred williams wrote about it in his books .

did you hear the story about the hoard of roman coins that is supposed to be buried in the EDA , it was stolen by "guard" at nythe who then buried them , but they have never been found .

i know of at least one roman coin hoard found in wanborough some years ago .

there was a big archaeological dig in the 70s i think, just past the wanborough flyover , where its still fenced off , should be well documented .

we have the ancient earthworks at liddington castle overlooking all the EDA area , and the ancient ridgeway road passing through and encircling it that subsequently leads to avebury/stonehenge .
the picture relating to stonehenge is bigger than some may think and the land and hills surrounding us played a big part in what went on at stonehenge .

we have so very much ancient history right within earshot of the EDA and it all needs recording and some of it preserving for all future inhabitants to be able to enjoy or scientifically study as we have .

Obiviously your going to find roman remains, there was a roman road over their somewere. No one knows were it was, but I think it was near ermin st.

But I think we have enough junk to know who and what these people did.

Even I have roman gold and bronze.

I can even get you genuine venetien pottery, roman oil lamps are still available in Tunisia around el gem.

Hoards are plentyfull, I know of one found in someone,s(my mates) back garden.

Just out of fleeting interest, how many people post on the Adver comments section who aren't councillors, BNP supporters or trolls on thorazine? (sometimes some of these things may go together)...

Nothing like the internet to act as a digital advert for the quality of resident in our culturally engaging town! ;-) ... and people seriously wonder why this place has got the rep it has, eh?
