More schools and a nursery confirm swine flu cases

Cases of swine flu are increasing in west Wiltshire with more schools and a nursery confirming they have cases.

St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon and Just Learning Nursery, on the Paxcroft Mead estate in Hilperton, are the latest to confirm cases of swine flu, while George Ward School in Melksham, which confirmed a case of swine flu in a pupil yesterday, announced it had a second confirmed case today.

The Clarendon College in Trowbridge confirmed they had cases yesterday, while there are suspected cases at The Mead Primary School in Hilperton.

NHS Wiltshire is not confirming how many confirmed swine flu cases there are in the county, and as the swine flu plan has moved onto the treatment stage, suspected cases are no longer being tested.

Today Maggie Rae, joint director of public health for NHS Wiltshire and Wiltshire Council, told the Wiltshire Times that there was no panic in the county, and there was no need for panic, as the majority of swine flu cases were mild, with some infected people simply taking paracetamol.

She said: “With schools for instance, a suspected case of swine flu still means business as usual, because if a person is ill they will be out of school.

“We have been providing letters to let people know what is going on and working with the schools because even if we feel there is nothing to worry about we feel its important that all the parents get the message and know what’s going on.

"In Wiltshire people have been very sensible and when we have reported our situation we have had a very good response.

“I feel people in the county are keeping calm and even being good humoured about the situation and after visiting GPs surgeries this week I was impressed to see all the gels and tissues being provided.”

Today a case was confirmed at Just Learning Nursey in Hilperton in a child who regulary attends there.

A spokesperson for the nursery said: “A child who normally attends the nursery has been confirmed with swine flu and is remaining at home.

"We are working closely with, and following advice and guidance from, the health authorities. The Health Protection Agency has recommended that the nursery remains open and parents are being kept informed.”

St Laurence School said a Year 8 pupil had been confirmed as having the virus and was off school recovering.

Deputy headteacher Richard Clutterbuck said: "The student has been absent from St Laurence this week, is currently being treated and will not return until he has made a full recovery.

"There is no cause for panic and further updates will be provided as and when needed. "Government advice is that schools remain open unless there is an outbreak on a very wide scale and only after consultation with Governors, Wiltshire Council and NHS Wiltshire. "However, I trust that St Laurence can operate very much as usual and especially with such a packed programme over the next two weeks."

NHS Wiltshire said anyone with flu-like symptoms, such as a temperature, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, runny noses or vomiting/diarrhoea, should phone their family doctor for advice.

She added that they should not attend the surgery to avoid spreading the infection.

They are still not telling us who are at risk and not to worry.
They keep saying people hit the hardest are the ones with underlying health issues...
What are they?

I've heard it's asthema sufferers.

Those at risk are anyone suffering from weakened immune systems be it from a disablilty or cancer treatments etc, pregnant women (apparently they are given a different medication from Tamiflu) and those with lung problems, basically its the same criteria as those who are recomended to have the annual Flu Jab.

The ones that are being confirmed at the moment are the people that were tested before government advice changed earlier this week as there is a backlog, so those results are still coming through.

Anyone after that point will not get tested and as such will not be confirmed cases but suspected only.

My son this week came back from school with a few symptoms. I phoned the G.P and gave him a prescription for tamiflu. I as the mum was his flu friend, how is this stopping the spead of the infection?
Luckly after a dose of paracetamol, he was backto his normal self.

most schools in the area now have suspected cases but as theyre not testing anyone to be certain, most may just have common flu. i think its a waste of tamiflu stocks, god help us if we do have a major outbreak if they cant cope with testing a small outbreak!

Two of my daughters were diagnosed with swine flu yesterday. My 9 year old started with a stomach ache on Saturday which then lead to a fever and flu type symptoms. It didn't occur to me that she had it as the main problem was the stomach pain, which I've since found out is a symptom. With my baby daughter it started with a high temperature, runny nose...although it is possible there are other symptons such as sore throat or stomach pain but as she's under a year it's hard to tell.
It was a pain to have to go to Trowbridge hospital to get the tamiflu (with id for each of us) and my baby was violently sick after the first dose. I'm hoping she keeps the next one down as my doctor pointed out that this was the only thing that works which is scary considering she's in one of the high risk categories. I'm now just waiting for the rest of us to catch it...fun times ahead!

Very concerned that on dropping off my child this mornig at nursery, Longscroft in trowbridge, we were advised there was a a confirmed case of Swine flu, my concern is that the sibling is still allowed to attend nursery, should they be pff too to prevent the chance of further infection, I would appreciate any advise on this.
many thanks

Personally i would of said they should not of been allowed to attend as chances are it is in their system also, however i know at Avenue sibblings have been allowed to attend. This is very contagious as you all know and quickly spread. It is a constant worry i know,i have 4 young children and most illnesses have a temp, headache and cough etc.I suppose it is down to gut instinct.Do not agree with people not being tested and given Tamiflu because if you take this and it is not swine flu,if you get it for definate this may not work as well and also it is using up stock that is needed when it is a definate diagnosis.I know a lot of mums are tempted to keep their child out of school because of swine flu, however it could be picked up anywhere so really there is no sense in this.Personally i would question the school over this situation.

I asked whether my other 2 children should stay away from school and, like I thought, was told they should carry on as normal unless they present signs. One was sent home from school this lunchtime with a headache! I understand that as 2 of her sisters are ill with it that she is likely to get it but I also feel the school has panicked at the very first sign. She has no temperature or anything yet.

I've got Swine flu. The doctor diagnosed it over the 'phone as he didn't want me in the surgery. I didn't feel too bad until I took Tamiflu then I felt terrible. The doctor advised that it could cut the flu by one day. My advise is not to take the Tamiflu. Terrible stuff.

I hope you are feeling better meester david, however people who have underlying problems if advised must take this Tamiflu or it can be fatal for a small amount of people with other illnesses. If doctors dont feel the drugs are needed they wont prescribe them.

Much better thank you tethered. It seems to be going. With a bit of luck I might have given it to Russell Hawker.

I live in the middle east where we luckily have no cases of swine flu but I am a Trowbridge girl and we are back to visit friends and family in September. I will also be 30 weeks pregnant when we are back which im a little worried about as Pregnant women are in the "high risk" category. Is swine flu that bad in west wiltshire and have i got anything to worry about with being pregnant as i don't want to be putting my baby at risk? Your help will be appreciated.

It is a big problem in Wilts at this moment i am afraid to say.All except 1 school in Warminster have people off with this illness.Doctors only prescribe Amoxicillin in normal illnesses if you are pregnant. As far as Tamiflu is concerned i would not like to say either way about what risks the baby may be in when the drug is passed through you to the baby.I reccomend asking your own gp or nhs direct to put your mind at ease.I know this is worrying to you,i have 4 children who are all under 6 who can not all tell me if they are experiencing flu like symptoms.A temp above 38 with 3 flu like symptoms are normally being treated as swine flu.I hope this is of some help to you.
