Guides' pride as two Trowbridge teens presented with top awards

Two Trowbridge teenagers have been presented with the highest award in Girl Guiding.

Clarendon College pupils Hayley Naylor and Chloe Decarteret, both 16, have won the Baden Powell Award.

The two chose to be presented with their hard-earned prize on July 21 by the leader of 1st Studley St John’s Guides, Marion Davies.

Mrs Davies said: “We are very proud of them. It’s been quite a while since we had anybody who has done it so hopefully it will encourage some of the other girls too.

“They could choose whoever they wanted to present them with the award and I was very flattered they chose me.”

The award is split into five zones: healthy lifestyles; global awareness; discovery; skills and relationships and celebrating diversity, and the girls had to take part in a total of 10 courses or projects from those five zones in order to qualify for the award.

They spent 18 months working towards their goal and went on various courses, worked towards badges and even took part in an event in Bristol on board the Matthew, the replica of the ship John Cabot sailed to America 500 years ago.

Chloe created a recipe book and Hayley sponsored an animal in a sanctuary and encouraged others to do so too.

1st Studley St John’s Guides have about 25 members and meet every Tuesday evening in St John’s Church Hall.

- About 39 Guides and leaders from the group are spending 10 days in Adelboden in Switzerland. They are staying in a self-catering chalet and will be going on walks in the mountains and sight-seeing as well as visiting the oldest of four world guide centres.
