More than 2,000 people attended this year’s Westbury Lions Club annual donkey derby, at which more than £2,000 was raised for local charities.

The fourth annual donkey derby, in which 16 donkeys took part, was held at Westbury Country Park on Sunday with the first race starting at 1.30pm.

David Firth, 68, of Wingfield Road, Trowbridge, is the marketing chairman for Westbury Lions.

He said: “We had more people attend than in previous years and we raised more money than ever before - I think we raised more than a third more cash than last year.

“Money is still coming in but at the moment we’ve got £2,500, which will be distributed to deserving charities in Westbury and the surrounding villages.

“We had more activities for the children this year, including donkey rides, trampolines, bouncy castles and a mini fun fair. As long as we make it a great day for the family people will come back year after year, and we’ll be back again next years bigger and better.

“The donkeys were brilliant, very well behaved, and all the races were very competitive.”

The donkeys were brought in from Weston-super-Mare.

Meanwhile the Lions have teamed up with Westbury Rotary Club to put on a music festival in the town, which will take place over the weekend of September 25.

The festival will take place across four venues; Edington Parish Church, Dilton Marsh Holy Trinity Church, Westbury Parish Church and Westbury Country Park, and will a concert by the military band of The Rifles Brigade.
