The congregation at All Saints Church, Burbage has committed itself to raise around £6,500 to help African villagers rebuild a bridge.
Barry and Liz Smith, who worship at All Saints, visited Kembedole, a small village in southern Sudan which has been wracked by a long civil war.
The couple spent ten days with the Christian charity Tearfund and two of its vice-presidents, Lord (former Archbishop of Canterbury) and Lady Carey.
They saw at first hand a number of projects aided by Tearfund in both Sudan and Kenya.
Villagers in Kembedole have already chipped rocks by hand to start building the bridge, which was destroyed during the civil war. They need the bridge so they can take their crops to market.
Mrs Smith said: “The community in Burbage is being encouraged to support a whole range of fund-raising initiatives.”
One of the first is a ten-week modern ballroom and Latin American dance class run by qualified instructors Rob and Nicola Grist starting tomorrow, Friday October 9, from 8pm to 9.30pm in Burbage Village Hall.
Fill the Gap, a weekly soup lunch provided by a team from All Saints, is giving all its donations to the bridge project during November.
